For 16 years, Dr. Bob and Diane Meyer have led 35 short-term, portable dental missions in 30 developing countries, while working with 15 Christian organizations. They are passionate about providing dental care, education, and encouragement to others at home and overseas. Dr. (Colonel) Bob completed a 30-year career in the Army, works as a dentist in a comprehensive dental office, and is the president of the Christian Dental Society. Diane’s experience as a registered nurse, a certified teacher, and a dental assistant complements their mutual desire to serve those people God places in their path. Bob earned a Bachelor of Science degree at the United States Military Academy at West Point and a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree at the University of Oregon Dental School. He completed a two-year, post-doctoral residency in comprehensive dentistry at Fort Knox, Kentucky, and the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. As commander of the world’s only airborne dental unit, Bob’s responsibilities included training, equipping, and deploying portable dental teams in support of Army military missions, which advanced his expertise and confidence to pursue dental missionary work. Bob directed the Army’s Advanced Education in General Dentistry Residency program, where he prepared young dentists to function independently and competently, often in austere settings. Bob conducted the first Tri-Service Dental Symposium on Field Dental Equipment. He continues to advise on standardization, design, testing, and fielding of new portable dental equipment. Diane received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree at the University of Oregon Health Sciences Center and a Master of Science in Teaching degree at the State University of New York. Diane has worked intermittently as a registered nurse and an elementary school educator while fielding the primary responsibility of raising three children and homemaking at 12 Army locations. Desiring to participate in missionary work as a small child, Diane is now using her nursing, teaching, and parenting experience in the dental mission field. Bob’s publication and research produced a wide variety of articles written in many dental journals to include the American Dental Association, General Dentistry, Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry, Journal of Endodontics, Compendium of Continuing Education in Dentistry, AGD Impact, and the U. S. Army Medical Journal. Bob published manuals on theExpert Field Medical Badge as well as Standard Operational Procedural manuals for clinical, field, and garrison dental operations, infection control, and dental company operations.
